The clients for this beautiful residence found their homesite along Spring Creek in Mountain Brook. The direction to Macknally Land Design was to incorporate their plans for a Mission-style house to appear as if it grew out of the forested hillside. To minimize the site disturbance, exterior features of the site took advantage of previously cleared areas or small niches within the landscape. The sensitive placement of native trees and plants blends the new vegetation in with the existing forest.
A pedestrian bridge provides access to the house from the parking area over a stone-line stream in the hillside. Dropping to the creek below, the stream incorporates a recirculating waterfall. Native riparian plants were nestled along its edges of the stream. Opposite of the creek view, the interior living spaces look out into a courtyard with the backdrop of the woodland garden. Out of a carved limestone runnel, water falls into a calm pool framed with perennials and ornamental grasses.
