Macknally Land Design worked with the architects on the implementation of the campus design for the Hilltop Montessori School in the traditional planned community of Mt. Laurel, Alabama. Nestled into the existing woodland, the school takes advantage of the forests for aiding in heating and cooling the building, environmental education for students, as well as the aesthetic views. The school is connected to the town via sidewalks and trails. The school was also sited to utilize existing playing fields in the town which further limited site disturbance.
The school has achieved its goal of obtaining LEED (Leaders in Energy Efficient Design) Certification. This was achieved by minimizing disturbance, preserving trees and minimizing storm water runoff. Landscape restoration of the site used native grasses, wildflowers, shrubs and trees to restore habitat.
