Ebenezer Swamp is a 65 acre site located on Spring Creek, approximately six miles northeast of the University of Montevallo. The site is heavily wooded with mostly mature hardwoods and pine trees and contains several small spring-fed streams which bisect the property.
Developed with the University, the goals of the masterplan were to preserve the existing habitat, conserve rare and endangered species within the habitat, and educate the populace regarding the importance and fragility of wetland habitats. The objective of the project is to create a self-sustaining environment that will have minimal impact on the natural environment. Once fully developed, the site will have a lecture hall, teaching and research facility, meteorological station, and a mile long system of elevated boardwalks and trails. All of these aspects of the design will provide a place in Alabama to learn, preserve, conserve, and educate so that future generations will be able to enjoy a native wetland landscape.
MORE »Macknally Land Design has worked closely with the University of Montevallo for several years in the development of the masterplan and implementation of that plan. Completed in the spring of 2007, the first phase of the boardwalk has been successful in providing an attractive and engaging way in which to experience the wonders of the swamp, while minimizing impact on the natural environment. The next phase of the boardwalk has received federal funding for construction.
